Multi Lang Dictionary

The Multi Lang Dictionary (MLD) for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is the only multilingual dictionary that’s smooth, fast, and powerful! Many use this to help them learn a new language; whether for school or for work, Multi Lang Dictionary is the go-to app to help you find that definition!

Features

Dictionary. Look it up!

Our dictionary, the main feature of the app is essentially a slew of multiple dictionary sources all wrapped up into one so that you can find the best, most accurate definition. You get the choice of Google Dictionary, Wiktionary, and our Offline Dictionary Reader (Pro). Wiktionary is great for finding the history and etymology  while Google Dictionary can find Web Definitions and Related phrases! Your choice!

Translation Station

Currently, the Translate tab uses Google Translate’s 53 languages to power its results. It is a machine translator, which means that it won’t be 100% accurate, but it’s great for quick meanings especially when you enter a sentence which the word is used to give context. For Pro users, you also get Romanization which shows the pronunciation in Latin of languages with special characters like Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, etc.

It Speaks Your Language!

In the MLD, we packed two versions of Text-To-Speech (TTS): an Online version and a portable offline version (Pro). In the free online version, you can type anything under 99 characters (to save bandwidth) and have it said in your selected language accent. The offline version’s quality is limited to keep the install size low, but its speech synthesis does enable to customize the speech rate, the gender, and the language accent.

The Other Goodies

Besides the core features, MLD also has history with filtering, and bookmarks. Additionally, in the Dictionary and Translate tabs, you will find a slide bar button that has many shortcuts as well like back, forward, text size change, copy and share. In the dictionary tab, you will also find a word of the day from Wiktionary button which allows you to catch up on some new terminology! You’ll definitely learn something new with the Multi Lang Dictionary!

How to Improve TTS Quality

We’ve heard a lot of feedback regarding the TTS of the MLD on iPhone. Here is a simple troubleshooting/tips and tricks list to improve your experience.

I can’t hear the words, what’s going on?
Please check the system media volume (the same volume to play music), not the ringer volume. Also, check if the ringer isn’t silenced.

The TTS just gives me the result in English? what’s going on?
Make sure the picker wheel language matches the text in the textbox. Also, the speak tab does not translate the text, it just speaks it back in the selected language accent. Use the dictionary and translate tabs for that.

The quality is crap, can’t understand what they are saying?
We currently adopt espeak which is a TTS trusted by many developers globally, we adopted this because in our opinion, it is the best quality for a small download size. It is portable and offline so you can use it without an internet connection. Try to adjust the speech rate and volume for each. We are working hard to make better quality voices and options for online voices so it may sound better.

How do I install the TTS on many of my devices with the same iTunes account like other apps?
Go through the same process you would to buy the TTS for the first time, except for the next times, you will not be charged.

We hope these FAQs cover the majority of questions. Please feel free to send us any other questions via email.

Thank you so much to every one of our users for using the Multi Lang Dictionary! Your smiles make us smile as well :) . Here are some of the stories that truly make our efforts feel appreciated!

It was so easy to use, for the first time I could actually comunicate to my French speaking cousins thoughts that used words above my elementary capabilities! I think that charging a small fee to upgrade is perfectly acceptable, since someone else went to the trouble of providing me with a much needed service. Incredible how people refuse to pay less than the cost of a latte?

I sat down at a cafe in London a few hours before catching a train to Amsterdam. While I was there, I decided to try and find a translator app with offline and voice capabilities. This app has those features, but they cost $2.99 to access. Seemed like a good deal to me. When I purchased the “Pro Key” my iPhone said that I had purchased the content but hadn’t downloaded it. So I sent the makers of this app a somewhat angry email. Before I had finished my beer, they emailed me back and walked me through the somewhat convoluted way to download the paid content. Although there is no Dutch translation options (which is what I needed the app for) the fact that they made it right instantly is nothing less than amazing. Other app developers could learn a lesson from these people. Thanks again.

Recently my friend had a death in the family and came to the USA from Guadelejara Mexico with his new wife who knows almost no English at all. At one point, while trying to communicate without him there to interpret, someone mentioned that they had heard there was “an app for that”. So, I downloaded the free version of MLD and typed in what I was trying to ask her. I read the translated Spanish back to her and she immediately lit up with a smile and started to respond. She knew exactly what I was saying and we began to “talk” for the first time directly. I used it all day until I had to recharge my iphone, but by then I had met a wonderful new friend and made her feel more at home. THANKS!
